Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage can help women and their unborn babies in so many ways.

Massage increases the blood and lymph circulation for both mom and baby which in turn reduces edema and swelling, raises metabolism and immune function and stretches the skin to decrease chances of stretch marks. Some moms find it increases flexibility and also boosts energy .

Massage enhances your sense of well being by calming and appreciating your miraculous body.

Don’t forget that it helps with aches, pains, and muscle spasms, especially in the joints effected by pregnancy such as hips, spine, and legs.

Birth massage techniques have been proven to decreases pain awareness and can help with inducing labor in a mom and baby which is ready and improve the outlook of childbirth.

For being a client of Birthing Your Way you will receive a special rate for the following massages of $45 for a 60 minute prenatal massage or $65 for 90 minute prenatal massage. Please mention you are a client of Birthing Your Way when booking your appointment.

For massage services, please visit our website at www.naturalhealingandmassage.com or contact us at 801-404-7638 .

Prenatal Massage: Our Specialty

This is a relaxing massage to ease the discomforts of pregnancy. We use cushions and pillows to allow mom the utmost comfort.

These massages are NOT for pregnant women or children. Please visit our website for pricing on the following services. www.naturalhealingandmassage.com

Swedish

A Swedish massage is a very relaxing massage which consists of long, flowing strokes, kneading and friction on the more superficial muscles of the body. Swedish massage is a great “stress buster” and a good choice for your first massage experience.

Deep Tissue

This is a detailed deep massage perfect for after the birth of the baby.

Trigger Point and Injury Massage

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may trigger pain in the neck. The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache. Trigger points are caused by muscle overuse or injury, and because the aches are associated with moving parts, the pain is commonly mistaken for arthritis. Trigger point work is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort. The result of trigger point massage is the elimination of toxins in the muscles and the release of energizing endorphins. A significant decrease in pain is often found after just one treatment.

More Services Provided

Emotion Code Session

The Emotion Code is the simplest, easiest, and fastest method ever devised to find emotional baggage and release it, either from yourself or from someone else. Our emotional baggage consists of actual energies, the energies of intense emotional events that we’ve experienced that are still stuck in our physical bodies. These energies distort the normal energy field of the body, creating pain, malfunction, all manner of disease, and even cancer. In addition, these energies (trapped emotions) are the driving force behind PTSD, depression, anxiety, phobias and all manner of mental illnesses.

Aromatherapy Massage

Combines the benefits of Swedish massage with aromatherapy oil blends to promote balance for the body, mind, and spirit. Essential oils have a long tradition of providing a variety of therapeutic benefits for all the body’s systems.

Reflexology

Involves manipulation of specific reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to other parts of the body. Pressure is applied to the reflex zones to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion. Reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It is especially useful in stress-related imbalances.

Infant Massage

Massage is indicated for most newborns and may be Swedish-type massage, Craniosacral therapy, or energy work. It can be used to address various disorders such as colic, sucking problems, birth trauma, gastrointestinal problems, etc. Massage has been shown to hasten the growth of premature babies, shorten hospital stays and lower cortisol levels in infants under distress. Depending on your baby’s situation, you may be asked to obtain a release from your baby’s physician to allow consultation and treatment.

Salt Lake County Classes are available beginning in November. If you are interested in these classes, please call or email us for details.

From Kelly:

I highly recommend the Lamaze classes at Birthing Your Way to any mother wanting to feel strong and confident in her labor decisions. After class each week, I felt more empowered as a woman and a soon-to-be new mother.

They taught us how to speak our mind and be heard while also educating us about what to expect in both labor and new parenthood. They helped us practice different scenarios to help us know how to respond to different situations. I’m grateful the class focused on all of the aspects of labor and recovery.

I had planned on a purely natural labor, but ended up with a c-section due to complications. Luckily, I never worried and felt confident the whole time because I knew all of my options and felt confident I was making the best choice for me and my baby.

I hope everyone can feel as comfortable and prepared for labor as I did after the birthing classes at Birthing Your Way.

From Heather Lewis:

I want to enthusiastically recommend Heather Shelley as both a labor doula and childbirth educator.

Heather and I clicked almost immediately after we met. After discussing our philosophies on pregnancy as a normal event until proven otherwise, I knew she was going to be the person I wanted in the room with me. She was knowledgeable, professional, and I felt very relaxed around her. She also has a fabulous library of childbirth books and videos.

I wanted to have a natural, drug free childbirth at the local Austin birthing center. My husband was initially not so excited about this ‘weird’ birthing center idea. Over a few months with Heather’s help, I was able to educate my husband about birthing centers and midwives, and we were able to make my husband much more comfortable with the idea of the birthing center.

Part of this process was taking Heather’s Lamaze Childbirth classes. My husband learned about different types of birthing environments, and some of the women in the classes shared their different experiences with hospital births. After learning about what birth should look like, my husband was finally willing to tour the birthing center.

My husband and I learned a lot about relaxation and focus techniques from Heather and her partner Laura, and when I finally went into labor at 41 weeks, I needed every one of them. I was in back labor for the entire labor, so I was grateful for the classes.

I even succeeded in my goal of spending at least half my labor at home. My family has a history of 20+ hour labors. We just take forever. I went into labor at 3am with contractions coming regularly at 13-15 minutes. I spent the next 6 hours in the shower and on the birthing ball in my house until my husband woke up. Thanks to Heather’s great classes I was able to get through these first hours, and let my husband sleep.

I knew I’d need him more later in the day. We even managed to go out for breakfast. By 3pm though, things had starting getting a lot more uncomfortable, and we decided to head to the birthing center, and we called Heather to meet us there.

The birthing center was incredibly busy that night, if we had not had Heather, we would have been alone for much of labor. Heather and her partner Laura were fabulous while I spent most of labor in the tub at the birthing center. She always had new positions to try and helped guide my husband through supporting me. She took over when my husband needed a break or had to call family, and when I needed to be left alone to pace or yell or hold on to the wall, she knew when to give me space.

After 21 hours of labor at the birthing center, my son arrived happy and healthy, and I’m glad we had Heather there. She was exactly the support my husband and I needed. I only wish she were going to stay in Texas so I could hire her again for the next baby!

The cost of having your baby here with Birthing Your Way, LLC is $1850. This includes your prenatal care, the birth, postpartum care, newborn exam, and a special gift from us to you.

If you have a midwife other than Heather Shelley CPM, LDEM the cost is only $500 plus your midwife’s fee. This is much less than a hospital where the mother’s fee starts at $4000 and baby’s fee starts at $1300, this doesn’t include any extras the hospital may charge.

Contact us today for a tour! Call 801-615-1733 or email for more information.

Labor Suite

For those who live far from a hospital and need the extra medical services that a hospital provides, we offer labor support and comforts at our suites.

When you go into labor, come to our suite, and with the help of a Monitrice* you can labor in comfort until it is time to go to the hospital. This saves families who have a long drive from home, from going to the hospital too early.

You can labor with us until the hospital will admit you, and it saves you that long car ride during active labor to get you to the hospital in time.

We are located near American Fork, Orem Community and Mount Timpanogos hospitals.

Cost

$500 up to 12 hours includes attendant fee

$100 for every 6 hour increment

Includes a Monitrice for labor support.

* A Monitrice is someone trained in labor support. Although a monitrice has additional birth training, a monitrice does not deliver babies.

Insurance Coverage

I am an out-of-network provider with all insurance companies. Medicaid, IHC and TriCare have no out of network benefits and won’t cover the midwife or the facility fee.

However, many private insurance carriers will reimburse their members for midwifery services.

I use a billing service which specializes in midwifery care; they will gladly work with you to determine your benefits and submit claims to your insurance company for reimbursement.

If you would like to know whether your insurance company will cover midwifery services, including facility fees, please visit Midwife Billing and Services and complete the Verification of Benefits form. My billing service will call your insurance company and verify your benefits.

Birth Photography is a wonderful way to remember some of the most precious moments of your life. Whether capturing them on vide0 or photographing the once in a lifetime experience of bringing a life into the world.

As a birth photographer, I am there to capture the candid moments of your labor, birth, and the bonding done afterward with your new little one. I do this within the boundaries that we will have previously discussed.

The photos are done in black and white and in color. I do recommend that black and white be done at the time of the delivery as it portrays a more intimate feeling.

If hired as your pregnancy and/or birth photographer, that will be my one and only responsibility at the birth. I find that I do better work if I’m not worrying about the mothers needs, and am able to catch those precious moments surrounding birth in a better light.

I offer a free meeting for you to come and see a portfolio of my work and to talk to me about what you would like in capturing the moments of your birth.

Childbirth Photography Package $400

This package includes:

Up to 100 digital photos

A CD of all photos

Childbirth Digital Video Package $250

This package includes up to two hours of video footage on a DVD. Editing of the video is available for an additional cost. Additional DVD copies are $15 each.

Video and Still Photography Package $550

Includes everything from both the photography and digital video packages.

Heather Shelley and Lisa Pugh are the midwives that you will see for your care, we work in a group practice. We feel that this helps us to give our clients better care with less interruption. It also helps us to be better midwives and better mothers to our own children.

Heather Shelley

From my youngest childhood, I have been fascinated with pregnancy. When I became a mother myself, that fascination grew and expanded until I found the role of a doula. Having attended many births both in hospital, birthcenter and at home- and helping women through one of the greatest experiences of their lives, I knew that I had found my passion, to help women through birth.

I started Birthing Your Way after the birth of my second son. I took my doula training through ALACE (Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators) and DONA (Doulas of North America), and my childbirth education through ALACE, Lamaze and CAPPA, and postpartum training through CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association Years later I enrolled in midwifery school and started on my path to midwifery.)

I am now a Certified Professional Midwife with the North American Registry of Midwives, and a licensed midwife practicing in Utah. I have four beautiful children and a very understanding husband (husbands of midwives need to have a lot of understanding, as we keep odd hours). Through the years I expanded my knowledge of not only birth, but also of breastfeeding and the postpartum care of new mothers and babies. I recognize birth as a natural process of the female body, one that doesn’t require routine interventions.

We have become such a busy society that new mothers and babies are often left on their own without the help of a mentor (this used to be the grandmother’s role) to teach and guide them through the learning processes of parents. This deficit of care can cause a difficult recovery and be a lonely time for the new mother.

I hope to help women through not just childbirth, but also through as much of the childbearing years as I can.

The following midwives are a wonderful group of women who help me out in my midwifery practice. You may see them at your prenatal, your postpartum, or even helping me with your birth. They are my extra set of hands when I need them.

Lisa Pugh

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a delivery room nurse. That feeling never went away as I began having my own children. But it wasn’t until my sixth pregnancy that I discovered midwifery and the midwife that would save my baby’s life. I then had a new view on pregnancy and birth. I know for a fact that I would have lost this baby had I been going to an OB.

As soon as my children were all in school, I began my schooling to become a midwife. My desire to help women through this amazing experience has only grown.

Birth Doula Services

We provide physical and emotional help to women and their partners in labor. We will help you with your labor through massage, relaxation, breathing, positioning, and other comfort measures.

We want to help you to have the best birth experience possible for you whether you choose to have a natural birth, one that is medicated for pain, or have a cesarean.

The choice of how you birth your baby is yours and we are here to support you in that choice. We want to help you to have a positive memory about this special day.

To choose a doula with Birthing Your Way, we can meet and agree on services that will be provided throughout the pregnancy and delivery and immediately following birth. During prenatal visits we will learn what you will want during your labor and birth. We can then help you communicate these things to the medical personnel at your birth.

We will also help you to stay on track with your birth plan as much as nature and birth permits. Your doula will remain with you throughout your labor starting from when you feel that the doula is needed until up to a few hours after you have given birth.

Services Provided- Salt Lake County services are available.
Use of my books and videos on pregnancy and childbirth.

Help with initial breastfeeding immediately following the delivery and for the next few days as needed.

A postpartum visit within a month of the birth to discuss the birth and help with any new questions you might have.

Pictures of you, your husband, and your baby after the birth as the situation permits.

A CD of digital pictures will be given to you at the postpartum visit.

Doulas and Epidurals

Even if you plan on getting an epidural a doula can be a great help to you. There is always the chance that an epidural may not work properly or that you can’t receive one for one reason or another.

If the epidural does work it is nice to have someone there that knows about birth, and can help to relieve any tension or fears that you may have about birth and what is happening to you at that time. A doula can also help you to stay on track with your birth plan as much as possible at this point.

Doulas and Cesareans

A doula can help you to begin breastfeeding after the surgery and can stay with you while dad goes with the baby to the nursery. This way you are never left alone after surgery.

Doulas and Dads

Doulas try very hard to make sure that the father is involved in the birth of his child as much as he wants to be. They work with the father to help him to know what to do to comfort you and to give you both reassurance when things can get long and tiring.

It can be very hard for your husband to see you in pain and discomfort as you are someone that he loves very much, a doula can remain objective and calm and help to remove any fears that the two of you might have.

HypnoDoula

Heather Shelley has training as a doula in hypnosis births. This is for those who have taken one of the hypno methods of birth and are looking for a doula who can help them with that method of childbirth.

From Michelle:

I wanted to write and formally thank you for all that you did to help make the birth of my daughter a wonderful experience! Your presence was exactly what my husband and I needed to ensure that our wishes for a natural, loving birth were fulfilled.

I have to admit that I was unsure of exactly what your roll would be, since I had never had the pleasure of having a doula present at the births of my other children, but your support to the both of us was invaluable and I would highly recommend you as a labor assistant to anyone I know.

My daughter’s birthday will always bring back memories of having you there to help guide me and my husband in ways to focus on enjoying birth as a natural and peaceful event. I sincerely wish you all of the best in your career as a doula, and hope that all of your other clients feel as lucky as we do!

From Barbara:

Heather was our doula for the birth of our first child. At the encouragement of our birthing class instructor, my husband and I interviewed several doula candidates before deciding on one. Once we met Heather, we just knew she was the person we wanted in the room with us when our son was born. She was warm, confident, and non-intimidating and we felt comfortable with her at once and throughout every moment of our birthing experience.

Heather supported me as I labored at home in the tub, taught my husband how to help me with hip presses, and was physically there with me during each contraction. I never felt alone. My birth did not go exactly as planned and having Heather to rely on helped me feel unafraid. Her expertise was invaluable to us as first time parents.

She was so wonderful during our hospital birth that my doctor asked for her ard so she could refer other patients to Heather! The birth of a child is so special and I would not hesitate to share that experience with Heather again.

Immediate Postpartum Doula Care

This is a unique and very valuable service offered from Birthing Your Way. Immediately after the birth, a trained midwife or doula can offer Immediate Postpartum Doula Care to you and your baby.

This doula or midwife can stay up to 8 hours after the birth to observe both mother and baby, help mother, make a meal, and help with breastfeeding.

This service can be helpful for any new mother but we feel in can be particularly helpful to those moms who have had long, hard, or complicated labors or births at home. This allows the family to rest, and have someone to care for them after the adrenaline wears off.

This doula can also provide reassurance by answering questions after the couple has been able to sleep on anything from is this amount of bleeding ok to is the baby suppose to nurse this long.

The rate is $20 per hour with a 3 hour minimum. We are available all times of the day and night.

Postpartum Doula Services

After a baby is born most new mothers and fathers can use the additional support of a Postpartum doula. As a postpartum doula I want to help make this time an easier one for new mothers.

Motherhood is a huge change in your life and the adjustment period feels less overwhelming when you have someone to help with your questions and concerns. it is for this reason that a new mother and her partner want the help that a Postpartum Doula can offer.

Many peoples mothers and extended family members are not always available to help, and even if they are available, some mothers and family members do not have the breastfeeding experience to support a new nursing mother. Most postpartum doulas give breastfeeding support along with newborn care tips, and take care of necessary household tasks. This can help to ease your transition into motherhood.

Doulas are flexible to the needs of each family. They are there to encourage and teach families to care for their own newborn. They help mothers and fathers to trust their instincts in meeting their baby’s needs.

Postpartum Doula Services for the Mother and Baby Include:

Breastfeeding education and support

Advice on basic newborn care including feeding, bathing, infant massage, soothing, swaddling, safety issues, dressing, diapering and anything else that you need help with, etc…

Postpartum Doula Services for the Family Include:

Errand running

Meal planning & preparation

Emotional support during your transition into parenthood

Care & activities for siblings

Grocery shopping

Doing the dishes

In order to receive postpartum doula services, the family must have an initial meeting with the doula, and a second planing meeting before the birth.

Availability:

The postpartum doula is available for up to 12 hours a day with a 3 hour minimum during the day.

Fees are $20 to $30 an hour depending on the duties requested and number of children. A $100 deposit is due at the time of the planning meeting. This fee is a nonrefundable retainer applied to your contract.

Doula services must be paid for at the end of each week or upon completion of the contract, whichever comes first.

For those further than a 20 minute distance, a $2 an hour fee is applied for gas and travel time.

From Amy:

What I especially like about Heather is that she was very helpful, but not intimidating. I never felt like she was judging me when I expressed doubts or concerns about how to do something. She also made an effort to focus on me, the mother, which I believe was crucial to getting me back in the swing-of-things after childbirth.

I am sure our experience wouldn’t have been so smooth if it hadn’t been for Heather’s calming and educated presence. We certainly hope to use her again if another baby comes along, and I happily recommend her to anyone I know who asks about using a postpartum doula!

Ten months later, my husband and I still talk about how much we loved Heather!

Breastfeeding Help

I am available to assist the mother with just breastfeeding and/or pumping and storing her milk. This is $20 an hr with a 2 hour minimum.

Limitations of Doula Practice:

I do not diagnose medical conditions in the mother or the baby but will refer you to a health care provider when appropriate.

I am not a lactation consultant but have taken two advanced courses in breastfeeding and have breastfed my own infants. I will refer you to a lactation consultant as appropriate.
