Common Questions About Cost and Payment

Is birth center care covered by insurance?

Birth center care is typically self pay. Some insurance plans may offer partial reimbursement or allow certain services to be billed, depending on your coverage. If you would like to explore your benefits, we can submit a Verification of Benefits (VOB).

Because insurance reimbursement is never guaranteed and is often not determined until after birth, we require all clients to be paid in full by 36 weeks.

What does the base price include?

• Prenatal office visits

• Uncomplicated labor and birth at our center

• Immediate postpartum care and a 3-4 hour recovery stay

• Up to five postpartum visits for you and your baby

• Newborn care and checkups through six weeks

• A complimentary Helix Springs Family Care membership through your six-week postpartum visit

• Small, in-office ultrasounds when appropriate (the anatomy scan is not included)

• The option to include a birth doula

What costs are additional?

Many of the following are often covered by insurance, depending on your plan:

• Anatomy ultrasound

• Blood work and lab testing

• RhoGAM, if Rh-negative

• Blood typing for mom or baby

• Birth kit

• Newborn screening kit

• Medications, herbs, or supplements as needed

• Vitamin K for baby

• Antibiotic eye ointment for baby

• Physician care, if requested or needed

• Hospital transfer or ambulance transport, if needed

Can I use my HSA or FSA?

Yes — most families are able to use HSA or FSA funds for birth center care.

Midwifery services, prenatal care, and birth-related expenses are typically considered eligible medical expenses. If your plan requires documentation, we can provide invoices or receipts as needed. We recommend checking with your HSA/FSA administrator for specific coverage details.

What happens if I transfer to the hospital?

If a hospital transfer becomes necessary, our priority is always the safety of you and your baby.

If you transfer during labor, our team will help coordinate the transfer, communicate with the hospital staff, and ensure a smooth handoff of care. Once hospital care is established, your hospital team assumes medical responsibility. We do not remain for the entirety of your hospital labor or birth, but we remain available for support and continuity.

Even if you transfer, we continue to offer postpartum care for you and your baby if you choose. Please note that we do not provide refunds for hospital transfers once labor has begun.

Do you offer refunds if plans change?

Plans can change, and we do our best to be fair and transparent. Once labor has begun, fees are not refundable.

If you transfer care or choose a hospital birth before labor begins, a partial refund may be available depending on how far along you are and which services have been provided.

Some fees are nonrefundable, including the calendar reservation fee, on call availability fees starting at 36 weeks, and any care already provided.

We are always happy to discuss your individual circumstances and help you understand your options
