Twins
We offer experienced care for twin pregnancies and support twin births in the birth center when appropriate. With midwives andour doctor working together, your care balances safety, thoughtful planning, and your birth preferences.
Can twins really be born safely at a birth center?
Yes, in the right circumstances. Twin births can be safely supported in a birth center when specific safety criteria are met and the care team has appropriate training and experience. At Birthing Your Way, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we look closely at your individual pregnancy, your babies’ positions, and your overall health to determine whether a birth center setting is an appropriate and safe option for you.
What makes someone a good candidate for a birth center twin birth?
We look at factors such as baby positioning, growth patterns, gestational age, and your overall health history. These conversations happen over time, not all at once, and decisions are made thoughtfully and collaboratively with you.
How is prenatal care different when I'm carrying twins?
Twin pregnancies involve closer monitoring and more detailed planning. During your prenatal care, we spend extra time tracking the growth and positioning of both babies and discussing what to expect as your pregnancy progresses. You can expect ongoing conversations about your options and preparation for labor.
Who is present at a twin birth at Birthing Your Way?
Twin births are supported by an experienced team. Your care is midwifery-led, with our doctor closely involved and available. This collaborative approach allows us to provide personalized care while also having physician support readily available. Everyone on your team understands the unique needs of twin births and works together to prioritize safety and calm, coordinated care.
What does labor look like with twins at the birth center?
You can expect freedom to move, labor in positions that feel best to you, and access to comfort measures such as water, nitrous oxide, and other supportive techniques.
We carefully monitor both babies throughout labor and are prepared for the unique dynamics of birthing two babies, including the time between births and changes in positioning.
What happens if one baby is head down and the other isn’t?
Baby positioning is discussed in detail during pregnancy. We talk through different scenarios so you understand what is possible and what would be recommended in your situation.
What if something unexpected comes up during labor?
Planning for the unexpected is part of responsible care. Throughout your pregnancy, we talk openly about “what if” scenarios so you understand how decisions are made and what options are available. If a situation arises that requires a higher level of care, we are prepared to act quickly and coordinate next steps, always keeping your safety and your babies’ safety at the center of decision-making.
Breech
A breech diagnosis doesn’t automatically determine how or where you give birth. At Birthing Your Way, we carefully evaluate breech pregnancies and may support planned vaginal breech births in the birth center when appropriate. Planning is based on specific clinical factors, including breech presentation, gestational age, estimated fetal size, pelvic assessment, medical history, and how the pregnancy progresses over time.
When a breech birth is part of the plan, preparation is detailed and intentional. Breech births are midwifery-led with our doctor actively involved, and care includes clear discussions about labor expectations, comfort options, and how decisions are made if circumstances change. Our approach prioritizes careful assessment, coordinated care, and helping you enter birth informed and prepared.
VBAC
VBAC planning begins with understanding your previous birth and how it shapes this pregnancy. At Birthing Your Way, we work with families who are planning a vaginal birth after cesarean and may support VBAC births in the birth center when appropriate. Care planning includes reviewing your cesarean history, overall pregnancy health, and any factors that may influence labor and birth.
Throughout pregnancy, VBAC care focuses on preparation, ongoing evaluation, and flexibility. Your care is midwifery-led with our doctor closely involved to support collaboration and timely medical input when needed. We discuss labor expectations, comfort options, and how decisions are made during birth so you feel clear about the process and confident moving forward.
